Next Flagship Chip Named: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Powers Galaxy S26 Ultra

Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit will begin soon, but the US chip giant has already announced the name of the new top processor that will do its job in devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. It will be the Snapdragon 8 elite gen 5.

Details on the Snapdragon 8 elite gen 2 next week

Qualcomm’s new top platform for high-end smartphones is Snapdragon 8 elite gen 5. Marketing boss Don McGuire recently announced the designation of the upper class chip recently the group’s blog. He also revealed how Qualcomm came up with this name, because at first glance you seem to use a curious mix of previously common names and could skip some chip generations. McGuire makes it clear in the Qualcomm blog that this is not the case and explains how the name comes about.

On the one hand, it is actually the fifth generation of the series of top SoCs founded with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. After making it up to the third generation before last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, Qualcomm probably refrained from “4” in the name, since this number can be partially negative in Asian space.

Qualcomm soon with more than one top SoC?

This year you combine the old practice of the generation name in the name with the “Elite” to definition the chip as a top model because “it is the elite,” said McGuire. However, this also indicates what has been rumbling through the rumor mill for several months: that Qualcomm wants to offer at least two variants of its top chip this year. In his blog entry, McGuire also explained that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was the top product, but is on the market as part of a “wider roadmap”.

Soon there will therefore be “upcoming mobile platforms” as part of the “Gen 5”. Customers could then better differentiate from the names of the various products, which fits their needs. So we can certainly assume that there could also be a Qualcomm “Snapdragon 8 Pro Gen 5” or the like, whereby the manager also asked to have some patience until the entire portfolio is presented. Perhaps it will be ready for the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, which will take place in Hawaii from September 23, 2025.
