Nintendo Raises Switch Prices in the U.S., Citing New Tariffs

Nintendo raises the prices for the original switch in the USA and warns of possible price increases for Switch 2, games and Nintendo Switch online memberships. The decision was made “due to the new market conditions”, says Nintendo.

Nintendo increases switch prices quite drastically

And what is behind it is clear: it is Donald Trump’s customs policy. According to Nintendo, the price adjustments come into force on August 3 and affect all Switch models, but to a different extent. In the future, the standard switch will cost $ 339.99 (previously $ 299.99), the Switch Oled increases to $ 399.99 (previously $ 349.99) and the Switch Lite to $ 229.99 (previously $ 199.99). Joy-Con controllers also become five US dollars and now cost $ 99.99, while Nintendos alarm alarm alarms increase by $ 109.99.

Market conditions as justification

There is also Nintendo’s warning: The company announced that price adjustments for switch 2, physical and digital games and Nintendo Switch online memberships “could be necessary in the future”. This statement makes you take notice, since the Switch 2 is already significantly more expensive in Germany with 469.99 euros than its predecessor. In the United States, there is definitely a big discussion among gamers and less nice words that the population now has to pay for US politics.

Nintendo justifies the price increases with “market conditions”, without naming specific details – the group does not have to be that, everyone is clear why prices are increasing. Loud IGN are the duties announced by President Trump for countries such as Vietnam and other Asian countries. Nintendo had already relocated a large part of his production from China to Vietnam in 2019 to avoid tariffs. However, the new tariffs on Vietnam with up to 20 percent will now lead to significant cost increases.

Background: This transfer of production was originally a strategic decision to avoid the trade war between the USA and China. At that time, the United States introduced tariffs of up to 25 percent to Chinese electronics products. Nintendo reacted quickly and moved the production of his consoles to partners like Foxconn to Vietnam. Now this strategy could be destroyed by the new customs plans of the Trump administration.

Switch 2 remains spared for the time being

The Switch 2 itself remains unaffected by the current price increases, which in view of its already high price of 469.99 euros in Germany is not surprising. The new console has caused a sensation since its announcement in January 2025 and is considered one of the master’s warted gaming consoles of the year. However, certain Switch 2-accessories and selected Amiibo figures are also becoming more expensive.

International effects are still unclear

So far, the new price increases are limited to the USA, but prices have already rose in Canada. It is not yet known whether and when and to what extent European markets will be affected. The original Nintendo Switch was introduced in March 2017 and has developed into one of the most successful consoles of all time, now the sales of the Switch 2 are already six million copies in the first few weeks.
