Nintendo Reportedly Working on Remake of ‘Best Game of All Time’

A true classic in Nintendo video game history may be about to get a new release. The publisher is said to be working on a comprehensive remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2, which could be released this year.

Return of a classic

After fans have already completely ported Nintendo’s classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (OoT) to the PC using reverse engineering, the Japanese publisher is now, according to current rumors, planning a new edition of the legendary role-playing game for the Switch 2. The original was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 and had a lasting impact on the action-adventure genre. For many fans and critics, the work is still considered one of the best video games of all time.

Ocarina of Time was the first game in the series to offer a three-dimensional environment. The title also established mechanics such as context-sensitive targeting, so-called Z-targeting. Such functions are now considered standard in the industry. Developing a remake would fit into Nintendo’s current strategy. The company has already brought back successful classics such as Super Mario RPG in the past.

Apparently released this year

The current information comes from the current podcast by the well-known Nintendo insider NateTheHate (via Insider gaming). According to him, development is progressing well.

There is another anniversary this year, namely that of The Legend of Zelda […] What I can tell you today is that we will be getting a remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 in the second half of 2026, just before the holidays. NateTheHate

Success and records

OoT was also a huge success for Nintendo financially. The module for the Nintendo 64 and later the GameCube sold a total of over 7.6 million times worldwide. The title remains on the rating platform to this day Metacritic also the highest score ever awarded of 99. A modern remake would have to meet the high expectations of the players. This could be one of the reasons why Nintendo has been reluctant to re-release the game. Some aspects made the original particularly influential.

These included the seamless transition between day and night and the semi-open world of Hyrule that players can explore. The developers would have to carefully adapt these and other elements to modern standards in a new edition. Since there is no official confirmation from Nintendo about a remake for OoT, the rumor should be treated with caution.
