News about the second generation Nintendo Switch is currently coming thick and fast. After design leaks based on data from case manufacturers recently made the rounds, a Reddit user is now providing even more information. There are various details about the design, controllers and more. Reddit / SexDrugsAndMarmalade
The Reddit community for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is actually the name of the device, is currently bubbling over. One of the users there even claims to have already gotten his hands on a prototype of the upcoming Nintendo game console. Based on his information, unofficial drafts of the Switch 2 logo used by Nintendo for the device have already been created. Supposedly the Switch 2 has a larger display and a new button with “C” printed on the right side. The controllers, which are still removable, will in future be attached to the housing of the actual console with magnets, with the buttons on the top edge of the controllers being magnetic and connecting to matching counterparts on the Switch 2 itself.
Apparently the new controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 also have a hidden feature that the source doesn’t reveal much about. “Think about lasers,” is the hint given by the source, which means that we can now speculate that we will again be dealing with infrared sensors or something similar, as they were already available on the Wiimote for the Switch’s predecessor, the Wii. The weight and external dimensions should largely correspond to what is known from the first generation Switch. As previously speculated, the prototype the source came into contact with had an additional USB Type-C port on the top edge of the device, which is probably only used for power.
As far as the buttons on the controllers are concerned, it is said that the upper shoulder buttons ZL and ZR are each a little larger than on the current Joy-Cons. The analog sticks of the new controllers now use the Hall effect and should therefore be able to work much more reliably than with the first generation.
The screen of the new Switch 2 is reportedly once again an LCD panel, which means that Nintendo’s strategy of releasing an OLED-based version onto the market later will likely be repeated in the second generation of the Switch. Looking at the expected performance, we hear that the new Switch version will be able to deliver 30 frames per second at 4K resolution when docked.
Nintendo is apparently already planning a special edition of the new Switch 2 for the launch, with the source talking about a launch title with a “9” in the name. This probably means Mario Kart 9, which could be introduced in conjunction with a special design of the Switch 2. Looking at the dock, we can hear that it will have a much more rounded design and allow the console’s display to protrude much further than before when docked.
The wait until the introduction should not be long. According to reports, an announcement is expected in January 2025, with the source even wanting to provide photo evidence of their claims after Christmas. Until then, we can enjoy the fan-made renders we’ve included above. The information provided by the source served as the basis.
