Nintendo Switch Gets Major Update Ahead of Switch 2 Release

With the firmware update 20.0.0, Nintendo prepares the current Switch console for the successor. The update brings virtual playing cards, a new Gameshaare function and enables the system transfer to Switch 2, which will be released on June 5.

Virtual playing cards and more for the Switch

Nintendo has published an extensive firmware update for the Switch. Version 20.0.0 introduces several new functions, which were implemented with regard to the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. On the most important innovations (the complete patch notes are on the Nintendo page can be found) virtual playing cards, gameshaare functionality and the possibility of transferring system data to the new console.

The virtual playing cards (“Virtual Game Cards”) appear as a new icon in the home menu and represent purchased digital software, DLCs and certain free applications in a clear list. Users can charge and exhaust these virtual cards between a maximum of two Nintendo Switch systems. A particularly interesting function is the possibility of giving virtual playing cards to other members of the same Nintendo account family group. Gameshare and online licenses

The update also introduces the Gameshare function, which will only be fully usable with the Switch 2. With this function, compatible games can be transferred from a Switch 2 to other consoles nearby to play together. The connection takes place exclusively via local wireless mode, whereby the Switch 2 must initiate the Gameshaare process.

Another innovation are the “online license settings”. When the setting is activated, users can play downloaded software or purchased DLCs while the system is connected to the Internet – even if the virtual playing card is not loaded. In addition, users can now limit access to the menu for virtual playing cards by entering PIN or Nintendo account registration.

Preparation for the Switch 2

With the update, Nintendo prepares the current generation of consoles for the successor. Under “System Settings> System”, the “System transfer to Nintendo Switch 2” option was added. Users can either transmit your data directly by local communication or via a dedicated server if you have to hand in your current console before receiving the switch 2.

With the server -based method, the current switch is reset to factory settings after the data has been uploaded. If possible, Nintendo recommends using the local system transfer after receiving the new console. An internet connection and an Nintendo account are required for both transfer methods.
