The latest firmware update for the Nintendo Switch is causing dissatisfaction among some players. Reports of battery problems, overheating and other errors are increasing. Nintendo has not yet commented on the allegations. Only some of the users seem to be affected.
Nintendo released a new firmware update for the Switch at the beginning of October 2024. Version 19.0.0 was actually intended to improve system stability and optimize the user experience. But instead there are now increasing reports of various problems that the update apparently caused.
Many users complain about significantly reduced battery life on their consoles. A Reddit user named Yukar1n reported that his Switch remains warm even when in sleep mode – an indication that the console is not properly switching to the power-saving sleep mode. Other users confirmed similar experiences and said they now turn off their devices completely instead of using sleep mode.
In addition to the battery problems, cases of overheating have also been reported. Some users also reported difficulties downloading games and content from Nintendo eShop. Not all Switch owners seem to be equally affected. One affected person stated that other devices within the family, which are mainly used in the dock, did not have any problems.
It remains unclear how widespread these problems actually are. A user who allegedly contacted Nintendo support was told that the problem might not be a widespread issue. The support representative stated that this was the first report of such difficulties that he had received.
Some users claim to have noticed similar problems before updating to version 19.0.0. One comment even pointed to difficulties since firmware version 14.0.0 from 2022. This could indicate that the current problems may not be solely due to the recent update.
There are currently only a few options for affected users. One option is to restart the console, which might help in some cases. However, it should be noted that the latest firmware version is required to use online multiplayer games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Downgrading to an older version is therefore not always a practical solution.
So far, Nintendo has not officially commented on the reports. Experience has shown that in such cases the company responds with a minor update to fix any problems that have arisen. Until then, all the affected users can do is be patient and use the recommended workarounds.
