Old Western Digital Accounts Needs To Be Updated

Western Digital is now announcing the upcoming end of support for some versions of My Cloud OS. Users who are still using older versions will soon lose remote access if they do not update.

The company now urges customers to update their WD My Cloud devices to the latest firmware available. Only then can you continue to receive security updates for the My Cloud OS firmware: “On April 15, 2022, support for earlier generations of My Cloud OS, including My Cloud OS 3, will end,” according to the company. “If your device is not compatible with My Cloud OS 5, you will lose remote access and will only be able to access it locally. Devices with these older firmware versions will not receive any security updates or technical support.”

Remote access is disabled

In principle, there is no reason not to update. Support is also given for older devices and the update can be carried out in just a few steps. Western Digital has decided to disable remote access to devices that have not been updated in order to protect customer data from attackers. Customers should now secure their devices accordingly and choose a unique and strong password.

You can now upgrade to My Cloud OS 5 until mid-April 2022. According to Western Digital, this version will be supported until at least the end of 2026. “My Cloud OS 5 is an important and fundamental security release that architecturally reworks our older My Cloud firmware and provides new defenses against common types of attacks,” said Western Digital. Devices that are no longer compatible with the My Cloud OS 5 firmware should be permanently replaced in the coming weeks.

Details on support can be found on the manufacturer’s website. Customers who want to exchange old devices will also receive a 20 percent discount code from Western Digital from January 2022. The old devices do not have to be returned for this action.
