OpenAI GPT-4.5 is set to launch next week, while GPT-5 will integrate with o3

Microsoft engineers are currently preparing server capacity for OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models, according to people familiar with the company’s plans, the Verge reports.

Although OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently admitted that GPT-4.5 will be launched in a few weeks, the report mentioned that Microsoft expects to host the new AI model as early as next week.

GPT-4.5 is OpenAI’s next frontier model, codenamed Orion, and its final non-thinking chain model. OpenAI has hinted that GPT-4.5 may be much more powerful than GPT-4, and subsequent GPT-5 models are expected to usher in more major changes.

The report also states that Microsoft expects GPT-5 to be released by the end of May, which is consistent with Altman’s promise that the next-generation model will arrive in a few months.

Although OpenAI released o3-mini last month, OpenAI no longer plans to release the o3 reasoning model separately, but will integrate it into GPT-5. This is consistent with OpenAI’s goal to combine its large language model to eventually create a more powerful model that can be labeled as general artificial intelligence, or AGI.

This updated GPT-5 will unify OpenAI’s o series and GPT series models to achieve a unified functionality.

IT Home noted that if OpenAI can successfully launch GPT-5 by the end of May, it will coincide well with Microsoft’s Build 2025 developer conference, which will begin on May 19.
