OpenAI Introduces “Deep Research” Tool in ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched a new feature in ChatGPT called “Deep Research,” designed to help users dive deeper into topics and gather insights faster. Similar to Google Gemini’s feature of the same name, Deep Research promises to achieve in minutes what could take hours for a human to accomplish.

Who Is Deep Research For?

Deep Research is tailored for users who do intensive knowledge work, like creating comprehensive reports or conducting in-depth research. The tool can process and synthesize data from hundreds of online sources, delivering reports “at the level of a research analyst,” according to OpenAI.

But it’s not just for knowledge workers. Deep Research can also be used for personal tasks, like researching big purchases such as cars, appliances, or furniture, helping users make well-informed decisions with ease.

Powered by an optimized version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model, the tool is designed for web browsing and data analysis. It can search, interpret, and analyze large volumes of text, images, and PDFs, dynamically adjusting its approach based on the information it encounters. OpenAI explains that every report includes citations for sources and a summary of its reasoning, making it easier to verify the results.

How to Use Deep Research in ChatGPT

Currently, Deep Research is available to ChatGPT Pro users, with plans to roll it out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users soon.

Here’s how you can use it:

1. Tap on “Deep Research” in the message composer.
2. Enter your query and, if necessary, attach any relevant spreadsheets or files for added context.
3. Once the tool starts running, a sidebar will appear showing a summary of the steps taken and sources used.
4. The tool takes about 5 to 30 minutes to complete its work, and you’ll receive a notification once it’s done.

In the coming weeks, OpenAI will add more functionality, such as embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytic outputs to enhance clarity and provide additional context.
