OpenAI Updates Website, Removes Diversity Commitment Page

OpenAI has quietly removed a webpage on its site that previously outlined its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The URL “https://openai.com/commitment-to-dei/” now redirects to a new page titled “https://openai.com/building-dynamic-teams/.” The updated page mentions the importance of “different backgrounds,” but notably does not use the word “diversity.”

The previous DEI page emphasized OpenAI’s ongoing investment in diversity, equity, and inclusion. It had pledged to “continuously improve our work in creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization,” as documented by the Internet Archive and cited in a 2023 CNN article.

The exact timeline of this change remains unclear, but evidence suggests it happened recently. The DEI page was still accessible as of January 22, according to an ABC News story. By January 27, OpenAI had introduced its new “building dynamic teams” page, as noted in this post.

The new page states, “At OpenAI, we recognize that the strongest ideas emerge when they are tested, debated, and improved by people with different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of thinking. We encourage a culture of curiosity where ideas can be challenged—not just accepted.”

When asked for comment on the change, OpenAI did not respond to questions about whether it reflects any internal policy shifts or adjustments. However, the company’s webpage on “fairness” in model training—which addresses efforts to remove social biases—remains live.

This move aligns with a broader trend among major companies distancing themselves from DEI rhetoric amid growing political and legal scrutiny. Just last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi called on the Department of Justice to “investigate, eliminate, and penalize” DEI policies deemed unlawful in private companies receiving federal funds.

Other tech giants have also recently scaled back on their DEI commitments. Over the past month, Meta, Google, and Amazon have either eliminated or adjusted their DEI strategies. Both Google and Amazon notably removed mentions of diversity and inclusion from their latest 10-K filings.

Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to work on government-related initiatives. The company recently secured a government contract and launched a ChatGPT tool for government agencies, further solidifying its ties with public sector operations.
