The Chinese manufacturer Oppo has introduced two new smartphone models with the Reno 4 series. The Oppo Reno 4 and Oppo Reno 4 Pro are said to offer decent mid-range hardware with 5G support – in a relatively affordable form.
The technical basis for both models of the Reno 4 series is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, so far the only chip from the US giant that comes with a directly integrated 5G modem. The Octacore SoC achieves a maximum clock rate of up to 2.4 GHz and should be sufficient for most tasks. It is combined here with eight gigabytes of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal flash memory. The Pro model even has a remarkable 12 GB of RAM in the more expensive version.
The differences start with the display. The Oppo Reno 4 has a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel that offers good FHD+ resolution with 2400×1080 pixels and has a pill-shaped cutout for the two front cameras. The Reno 4 Pro has the same resolution, but a 6.4-inch display, which also has a 90-Hertz refresh rate. In addition, the screen in the pro model can shine brighter with up to 1100 candelas.
There are further differences in the cameras, although both models have a Sony IMX586 main sensor with 48 megapixels. The Reno 4 Pro also has a Sony IMX708 sensor for the ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 megapixels, which is also accompanied by a 13-megapixel sensor for zoom shots. The “normal” Reno 4 has to make do with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-MP sensor for depth effects.
On the front, the basic version of the Reno 4 has installed a 32-megapixel camera together with another 2-megapixel sensor for depth effects. The Reno 4 Pro, on the other hand, has only a single front camera that also offers 32 megapixels. Both models are able to deliver 4K videos and use a revised electronic image stabilizer to produce less shaky pictures and videos even without dedicated hardware.
Oppo also gives the two new smartphones a curious combination of two batteries, each with a total of 4020 (Reno 4 Pro) or 4000mAh capacity. In both cases, a new version of the Super VOOC fast charging technology is supported, which pumps up the devices with up to 65 watts in each case, so that they can be fully operational again within a very short time.
Additional features include stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC and dual GPS support for even more precise location. One difference that customers have to consider when choosing between the two new Oppo Reno 4 smartphones is the case materials: while the Pro model comes with an aluminum frame and uses a back cover made from specially processed Gorilla Glass 5, the Oppo Reno 4 is completely made of plastic on the outside.
In both models, Oppo is so proud of the colors and finishes of the surfaces that the names of the colors used are strikingly written on the back of the case. Oppo uses the current Android 10 with its ColorOS 7.2 attachment as the operating system on both models. The two new smartphones will initially start in China with prices starting at the equivalent of 423 and 536 dollars respectively.
