Parcels: Higher prices & longer delivery times 2025

Deutsche Post and DHL will increase the prices for letters and parcels from 2025. At the same time, delivery times will be extended. We explain here what customers need to consider when shipping in the coming year and what changes there will be to the product range.

Higher costs, longer terms

From January 1, 2025, Deutsche Post and DHL customers will have to prepare for some changes. The Federal Network Agency has approved the price increases for letters and parcels requested by the Post Office. At the same time, delivery times for letters will be extended. The standard letter will now cost 95 cents instead of the current 85 cents.

The price of postcards increases particularly sharply: from 70 to 95 cents. Other letter formats are also becoming more expensive: the compact letter will cost 1.10 euros, the large letter 1.80 euros and the maxi letter 2.90 euros. For packages, the increases are more moderate. The DHL parcel S increases in price from 3.99 to 4.19 euros, the parcel M from 4.79 to 5.19 euros. A DHL package up to 2 kg will now cost 6.19 euros instead of 5.49 euros and the popular 5 kg option will cost 7.69 euros instead of 6.99 euros.

Delivery times and product changes

In addition to the price increases, there are also changes to delivery times. From 2025, the following applies to standard letters: 95 percent should reach the recipient on the third working day and 99 percent on the fourth working day. Previously, delivery was 80 percent the next day and 95 percent the second day. The “Prio” service for faster delivery is completely eliminated.

If you want delivery on the next working day, you will have to use the more expensive registered mail service in the future. However, some products will be discontinued completely, including registered mail and cash on delivery as well as the forwarding order (12 months) and storage service (3 months). The latter services with shorter durations will remain in place.

Post justifies price increases

Deutsche Post justifies the price increases with increased costs due to inflation and higher wages while at the same time decreasing letter volumes. According to the company, German postage prices are below the European average even after the increase. The Federal Network Agency had granted the postal service an average price increase of 9.85 percent.

The company wanted more leeway. The changes go hand in hand with the new postal law, which gives the post office more time for delivery. A Forsa survey commissioned by Swiss Post showed that 87 percent of those surveyed found delivery after two or three days to be sufficient.

Impact on consumers

For consumers, the changes mean higher costs and longer waiting times when sending letters. The new regulation could have a positive impact on deadlines: In the future, a four-day instead of three-day notification period will apply to tax assessments, which gives more time for a possible objection. The new prices will initially apply for two years until the end of 2026.

Existing stamps can still be used, but may need to be upgraded with additional stamps. New stamps with the adjusted values are already available.
