PayPal app becomes a digital wallet

PayPal goes on the offensive: The payment service introduces a mobile wallet function that enables direct payment at the cash register. Germany becomes a global test market for the function that is to run on iPhones and Android devices.

New possibility for contactless payment

PayPal enters the market for contactless payment at the box office and thus faces established services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay in competition. The new function is integrated into the existing PayPal app and enables users to easily pay for cash register terminals with their smartphone. The Reports the Handelsblatt And refers to an announcement of PayPal.

This solution should start for both iPhone and Android users and works wherever contactless payments are accepted via MasterCard. The new function will be available after an soon-to-be app update. Customers benefit from a seamless shopping experience that provides an overview of all online and offline purchases in the app.

Extended functions announced

PayPal selected Germany as the first market worldwide for the introduction of this new service. The mobile wallet solution then offers much more than just basic payment functions. Users also benefit from a cashback program that is valid for various partners in Germany when they pay via the PayPal app.

A special innovation is the “installment payment to go” function, which enables customers to pay purchases directly at the point of sale in installments. Flexibly selectable terms of three, six, twelve or 24 months are available, and the application is conveniently done via the PayPal app. According to PayPal, this is a “premiere in Europe”.

Relevance of the NFC opening at Apple

This development is particularly important for iPhone users. Jörg Kablitz, Managing Director of PayPal for the DACH region, describes the project as the largest investment of PayPal in product development for customers in Germany. The implementation was possible by opening the NFC interface to Apple devices, which Apple implemented as part of the European Digital Market Act (DMA).

The further the technology develops, the more difficult to ignore the advantages of digital payment. Cash continues to play a role, but we know that many consumers: inside and companies are ready for innovative alternatives. We are convinced that PayPal has more to offer than cash. Our app makes it easy and safe to pay by smartphone in the shop. Customer: Inside can make flexible decide how and when you pay – and can even save money. PayPal manager Jörg Kablitz
