Pixel Devices Get Charging Limit In Android Update

While lithium batteries in modern smartphones don’t suffer from the intense memory effect seen in older battery types, their efficiency and lifespan can still be impacted by extreme voltage and temperature levels. To address this, many Android manufacturers have implemented features to limit the maximum charging capacity, thereby helping to preserve battery health. This feature has now been introduced to Google’s Pixel lineup.

Earlier, Google was reported to be testing a “Charging Optimization” feature, allowing users to cap their phone’s charging level at 80% to avoid overcharging. This feature was expected to roll out in a beta update this December, but some Pixel 8 Pro users, including one user named SlimRock, noticed it arriving with the November security update. This suggests that Google has rolled out the feature ahead of schedule.

Keeping battery levels too low or allowing excessive charging can reduce a lithium battery’s lifespan. By limiting charging to 80%, this feature helps avoid overcharging and minimizes the number of charging cycles, which are key factors in extending battery health. Most phones automatically shut down when power is low to prevent deep discharge, but it’s advised to avoid turning the phone back on immediately unless necessary, as doing so repeatedly could damage the battery.
