PTA has placed a bar on the illegal import of sub-standard mobile devices. As per the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, it has stopped the unlawful import of the sub-standard mobile devices with the imposition of the Device Identification and Blocking System, as per a statement issued on Monday.
As per the statement since the implementation of the PTA Device Identification and Registration and Blocking System, the use of fake, sub-standard mobile devices that are being brought in the country through unlawful and informal channels has been halted.
It said that the import of the smart phones during the 11 months of 2019, as of the 30th of November, stands at 7.64 million. Making comparisons the import of smart phones in 2018 was 7.24 million.

Besides the smartphones, other devices having 3G and 4G technology functionality, like IoT, Tablets, Dongles, etc. imported back in 2018 were 4.82 million, whereas in the last eleven months of 2019, 7.11 million devices have so far been imported.
Moreover, 4G devices connect to the mobile operator’s networks have surged from 18percent in January 2018 to 31percent as of November 2019. Whereas, the 3G devices connected to their network have declined from 19percent in January of last year to 13percent of November 2019. This indicates those users prefer to utilise 4G based devices over 3G.
In contrast to the media reports, the mobile broadband penetration has also surged from 51.8 million subscribers in January 2018 to 76.4 million in November 2019 indicating a surge of 24.6 million owing to the surged usage of smart phones. It is also important to mention that 4G smart phones are being sold in Pakistan from Rs.6,450 to Rs.11,000.
