Qualcomm introduces a new chipset with the old branding

Snapdragon 778G

Two weeks earlier Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. As of now, Qualcomm has revealed the latest mid-range chipset i.e., Snapdragon 782G. It holds no fanfare given the latest Snapdragon 7 series SoC. Furthermore, it is noticed that the chipset doesn’t coincide with the updated branding of the chip firm. It may be because the new chipset holds few updates compared to the Snapdragon 778G Plus introduced last year.

The Snapdragon 782G is fabricated on a similar 6nm TSMC process node as the Snapdragon 778G Plus. Both feature the same octa-core CPU setup. Though, its ARM Cortex-A78-based Kryo 670 Prime core is operational at a frequency of 2.7GHz. Thus, presenting a 200MHz faster maximum operating frequency of 2.5GHz. as per Qualcomm this addition further adds to a five percent improvement in CPU performance. Though, the rest of the CPU setup is the same. It holds:

  • three Cortex-78-based Kryo 670 Gold cores clocked at 2.2GHz
  • four Cortex-A55-based Kryo 670 Silver cores clocked at 1.9GHz
  • Adreno 642L GPU

Though, the Adreno 642L GPU is the same in both the old and latest versions of the chipset. But still, the company claims a ten percent faster graphics performance in contrast to the Snapdragon 778G Plus. Sadly, a slight CPU and GPU boost appears to be all the Snapdragon 782G will bring forward. No other significant updates are made to the new chipset. While some of the features of the chipset are as follows:

  • Snapdragon X53 5G modem for mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks
  • Full HD+ resolution
  • 144Hz refresh rate
  • 4K resolution displays at 60Hz
  • supports up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM
  • UFS 3.1 storage
  • Built-in Spectra 570L ISP (Image Signal Processor)
  • Deal with a 200MP single camera or three 22MP cameras simultaneously
  • 10-bit color depth
  • 4K HDR video recording
  • Quick Charge 4+
  • aptX Adaptive audio codec
  • Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6700 system
  • support for 3D Sonic fingerprint reading sensors
  • a dual-frequency positioning system

As of now, the company has not shown when the first batch of Snapdragon 782G-powered smartphones will enter the market. No OEM partners have been announced yet. But we can expect the latest chipsets to feature in mid-range Android smartphones releasing next year. The Nothing Phone (1) is based on the Snapdragon 778G Plus. Maybe its descendant will receive the Snapdragon 782G.

As of now, we have to wait for more details regarding which devices will feature the chipset.
