We already know that Samsung and TSMC are awaiting potential clients for their 2nm chip processes. As of now, Samsung has only one potential client, which is its own System LSI unit for the 3nm process. In between these, Samsung aims to give tough competition to TSMC with its 2nm process. It appears like Samsung is successful in attracting a client in the form of Qualcomm.
According to an ETNews report, Samsung has received a go-ahead from Qualcomm for manufacturing a 2nm prototype chip. Reportedly, the prototype will be for the next-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen series. Well, if this is true, then it is a great accomplishment. One thing to notice here is that it is just the initial step since prototype commission and mass production are time-consuming processes. However, it is evident that Qualcomm is showing interest in Samsung Foundry’s 2nm fabrication process. We can hope that Samsung will receive the final order once its prototype gets approved.
The final approval for the order will be decided on the basis of the Multi-Wafer Project (MWP), which involves the creation of several semiconductor chip prototypes on a single wafer. The company makes the final decision on the basis of the performance of the prototype. It is the first time in the industry that we have the 2nm process. On the other hand, TSMC and Samsung are working on their respective versions. Reportedly, both companies have received the request for the creation of prototypes. It will be clear in the upcoming months which company receives the final order for manufacturing Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship smartphone chip.
Previously, Samsung Foundry signed the contract for manufacturing the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips with Qualcomm. Later on, the company assigned the contract for Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to TSMC. Power efficiency issues with Samsung’s processes were the main reason behind this step that ruined the company’s image. In the past, even though Samsung managed to manufacture 3nm chips earlier than TSMC, it was not successful in getting chip orders from Qualcomm. We hope that Samsung gets the opportunity this time.
