Qualcomm Presents Snapdragon 888+ Chip At MWC 2021 For First Honor Device

Qualcomm has just presented its new top SoC at MWC 2021 in Barcelona. The Snapdragon 888 Plus is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 888. First, the new smartphone processor will be seen in a device from Honor.

Qualcomm presented its new top smartphone processor at the MWC 2021 opening keynote in Barcelona. The Snapdragon 888 Plus is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 888 with slight changes. A standard practice of the manufacturer, which has made for very good SoCs in the past.

The new SoC has an Adreno 660 GPU, a Snapdragon X60 5G modem with a maximum download rate of 7.5 Gbps, and the FastConnect 6900, which enables the use of all current Wi-Fi standards. The ARM Cortex-X1 chip is still manufactured using the 5-nanometer process. This time the core is clocked at 2.995 gigahertz.

Qualcomm also mentions that its Hexagon 780 AI processor now manages 32 “tops” compared to 26 for the base Snapdragon 888. Tops stand for “teraflops to the second”, but rather illustrates the potential performance of the processor. This specification is not to be equated with the unit “teraflops”.

Snapdragon 888+ Hype

The 888 Plus will be onboard new high-end Android smartphones from the second half of the year, in which the manufacturers Asus, Motorola, Vivo, and Xiaomi are involved. Honor is likely to be the first manufacturer with its Honor 50 Pro+. However, it is not yet really clear whether the device will make it from China to Europe.

In any case, the new SoC only brings incremental improvements, so we shouldn’t get too caught up in the hype train. Apart from the higher clock speed of the main core, which should not be neglected, we do not benefit from any boost at the GPU level.

It is almost more exciting whether the new SoC can work in future cell phones without drastic thermal throttling. After all, we have had to attest to the Snapdragon 888 several times in the last few months with heat problems that could only be overcome with the Realme GT.
