Research: New numbers on the GPU market in times of crisis

The market researchers at Jon Peddie Research provide statistics on the current market shares of AMD, Intel, and Nvidia in the graphics processors, both in CPUs and on independent graphics cards. Although Nvidia made gains in graphics cards, it lost in the overall GPU market. Traditionally, JPR provides two different statistics on GPU market shares.

In the first survey, only the add-in boards are taken into account – i.e. graphics cards, such as those known as AMD Radeon and Nvidia GeForce and, more recently, Intel Arc. In addition, all GPUs for the PC sector are also considered, which also includes the much more numerous integrated GPUs in processors from AMD and Intel. For this reason, very different shares and also different market leaders come about.

Nvidia extends the lead in graphics cards

at the graphics cards Unsurprisingly, Nvidia is further ahead. While the market share fell from 80 percent to 75 percent in the first quarter of the year, the GeForce manufacturer will increase again in the second quarter of 2022 and reach 79 percent. In return, arch-rival AMD lost four percentage points with its Radeon graphics cards and still has a 20 percent share. The remaining percent is accounted for by the newcomer or returnee Intel, which is now trying again in this segment with the Arc graphics cards after many years of abstinence.

Shares of graphics cards (add-in boards) in the second quarter of 2022 (Image: Jon Peddie Research) Compared to the first quarter of 2022, the number of graphics cards shipped fell from 13.38 million to just 10.4 million. Compared to the same period of the previous year, however, this corresponds to an increase of 2.4 percent.

Dr. Jon Peddie, the president of JPR, as a kind of “disguised blessing”. Because of the currently low demand, manufacturers have to clear their well-stocked warehouses before the new GPU generation can appear. AMD recently confirmed that representatives of the new Radeon generation with RDNA 3 GPUs, which are expected to be the Radeon RX 7000, will be released this year. It is also not official – but still likely – that Nvidia will also debut the new GeForce generation aka RTX 4000 this year.

Intel continues to lead in all graphics solutions

Will all graphics chips for PCs, i.e. also the models integrated into CPUs, then Intel continue to be the market leader for x86 processors. According to JPR, Intel has a 62 percent share in the second quarter, which is a slight increase. Nvidia lost to about the same extent and still manages an 18 percent share, while AMD improved marginally with 20 percent.

Market shares for PC graphics chips (including iGPU) in the second quarter of 2022. The “global PC-based graphics processor unit (GPU) market” is said to have reached around 84 million units in the second quarter of 2022, which compared to the previous year means a drop of 32 percent. This is not surprising given that the business with PC CPUs (and thus their iGPUs) fell by 33.7 percent year on year.
