Microsoft brings Xbox backwards compatibility to computers. From now on, classics from the first Xbox console can be played natively under Windows 11. In addition to graphical improvements, shared licenses are also available.
Microsoft is expanding the backwards compatibility program and bringing games from the first Xbox directly to the computer for the first time. Users can now play select retro titles natively on Windows 11 as well as on handhelds like the ROG Ally. The company is responding to the desire of many gamers to be able to use the digital libraries across devices without having to rely on old hardware. The original program started in 2015 to make old titles playable on modern consoles. The implementation was considered a technical challenge because the architecture of the first Xbox was based on a modified Pentium 3.
Although the initiative was paused in 2019, the group is resuming the project for its twenty-fifth anniversary. The focus shifts to the computer in order to preserve history in the long term. As the company said in a post News Xbox announced, there are now four games available to start. These are Blinx The Time Sweeper, Conker Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge and Fuzion Frenzy. Anyone who already owns these titles digitally for the console will automatically receive a free version for the computer using the Play Anywhere function.
Alternatively, the games are included in Xbox Game Pass. The selection of the first four games is no coincidence. Blinx The Time Sweeper was originally intended to be the console’s official “mascot”. Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge is still considered one of the flagship projects for the early online service Xbox Live. Fuzion Frenzy was again a popular title when it was released in 2001, which even Bill Gates played at the console’s presentation.
The developers not only port the games, but also adapt them to modern systems. Computer gamers benefit from four-fold resolution scaling and support for VSync. There are also options for anisotropic filtering to sharpen textures and anti-aliasing to smooth edges. The small selection of available titles remains a disadvantage for the time being. To start the classics, Microsoft requires Windows 11. The hardware requirements are otherwise moderate by today’s standards:
