Retro gaming to clamp down on: Lego brings a replica of the Sega Mega Drive

Lego is bringing another kit for retro fans onto the market with the Sega Mega Drive. The detailed set consists of 479 pieces and is aimed at adult collectors. The compact console will be released in summer 2026.

New kit for retro fans

Danish toy manufacturer Lego is releasing a new model for adult collectors on June 1, 2026 in collaboration with Sega. A detailed replica of the Sega Mega Drive console is available for 39.99 euros. The set consists of 479 pieces and is aimed at gamers who want to put a piece of video game history on their home shelf. It complements the growing range of retro hardware made from clamping blocks. In contrast to previous kits such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, the new model is significantly more compact. The finished console measures around 15 centimeters wide, eleven centimeters deep and four centimeters high. Naturally, the system is purely for decoration purposes and no real games can be played. How Engadget reported, the kit includes not only the main device but also two removable controllers. These are about eight centimeters wide. A replica plug-in module with motifs of the well-known video game characters Sonic and Tails is also included. A special detail is hidden inside the housing: If you lift the module slot, you will discover a hidden portrait of the blue hedgehog.

Connectors and housing design

In order to recreate the distinctive curves of the original Sega Mega Drive, the Lego designers had to overcome a number of design hurdles. For the controllers, they opted for simple plug-in connections instead of true-to-original connections. Although this ensures a firm hold, it differs slightly from the historical model visually. The controller cables are also made from standard parts. The set offers the following key features:

• Miniaturized replica of console, controllers and game module
• Stickers for various regional logo designs
• Hidden Sonic motif in the console case

In addition to the actual console, buyers can customize the look of the model. The included stickers allow the Sega Mega Drive to be aligned with the various regional versions that came onto the market in Europe and Japan under this name – in North America, however, the console was called Genesis.
