The release of the gaming handhelds Rog Xbox Ally and Rog Xbox Ally X should be imminent. According to the youngest leaks, Microsoft plans to start the pre -orders in time for Gamescom 2025. The very expensive prices are again an issue.

Leave dates for Xbox handhelds

Technical equipment in detail

The ROG Xbox Ally has an AMD Ryzen Z2 a processor, 16 GB LPDDR5X-RAM and 512 GB SSD memory. The Premium model ROG Xbox Ally X, on the other hand, offers an AMD Ryzen Ai Z2 Extrem processor, 24 GB RAM and 1 TB storage space. In addition, the X version has impulse trigger for extended haptic feedback, a feature known from the Xbox controllers. Both devices use a seven-inch display with 1080p resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium for more liquid representations. The battery capacity in the standard model is 60 WH, while the X version has an 80 apartment battery. According to Microsoft, this larger battery should enable up to three hours longer playing time.

Xbox integration as a core feature

The unique selling point of the ROG Xbox Ally series lies in the deep integration of Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem. The handhelds start directly into an Xbox full-screen interface without first loading the Windows desktop. Microsoft promises savings of up to two GB of RAM and a reduction in power consumption by two thirds. This function initially remains exclusively for ASUS ROG devices and will not be available until 2026 for other Windows handhelds. Users have access to their complete PC game library from Xbox and other stores such as Steam or Epic Games. Xbox Play Anywhere title also synchronize scores and successes seamlessly between PC, Xbox console and handheld.

Microsoft’s long-term handheld plans

Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed the development of its own Xbox handheld console in November 2024. However, this has been removed from the market for several years. Earlier reports indicated that Microsoft originally planned an internal handheld development for 2027, but had put it on to third-party supporters in favor of partnerships. Sarah Bond’s announcement of a partnership with AMD for the joint development of chips for “The next generation of Xbox consoles in your living room and in your hands is revealing.

This indicates that Microsoft has its own hardware plans in the long term and that the ROG partnership with ASUS may be used as a test run for the handheld market. The ROG Xbox Ally series positions itself as a bridge between PC and console gaming and could significantly influence the handheld market if the leaked dates and prices are confirmed. The seamless integration into the Xbox ecosystem in particular could be attractive for users who already have an extensive digital game collection.
