Ryzen Threadripper 9000 wipes the floor with Intel’s Xeon

AMD had already announced its new Ryzen Threadripper of the 9000 series at the 2025 Computex, but has not yet revealed anything about the performance data. Now the company shows how much faster you become towards the predecessor and the competition.

First performance data

The Ryzen Threadripper 9000 models are based on the Zen 5 architecture and bring up to 96 processor cores depending on the execution. Now AMD has published concrete performance data-and these show clear progress compared to the previous generation and opposite Intel’s current Xeon-W series. The new processors are available in two variants: as Ryzen Threadripper 9000 for the high-end desktop (HEDT) area and as a thread ripper Pro 9000WX for professional workstations.

Both series use the new STR5 base and offer up to eight storage channels with support for DDR5-6400 and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. With AMD’s expo technology, memory transfer rates of over 7000 MT/s should even be possible.

In a direct comparison with the predecessor, the 96-kern model 7995WX, AMD promises a performance increase of up to 26 percent with the new 9995WX. The comparison with Intel’s 60-core processor Xeon W9-3595X is even more impressive: According to AMD, the 64-core thread ripper 9980x should work faster depending on the application. However, these are information from the manufacturer and not yet independent test results.

Prices still unclear

The advantages in creative and AI-based workloads are particularly evident. In rendering applications such as keyshot, AMD speaks of a growth of performance of up to 119 percent, while in chaos V-ray a 2.5-fold performance is to be achieved-each compared to the Intel chip. AMD also sees the 9995WX with up to 49 percent lead in the case of tasks in the field of artificial intelligence, especially when processing large language models – but here, however, with a GPU.

AMD has not yet published price information on the new thread ripper generation. The market launch is expected for the coming month. One thing is certain: AMD positions itself with the new 9000 series as a clear alternative to Intel’s workstation solutions-both for creative professionals and sophisticated hedge users.
