Samsung and LG extend their agreement for OLED TV panels
In 2023, LG Display and Samsung signed a deal regarding OLED TVs. Some of the WRGB OLED panels manufactured by LG Display were utilized in Samsung’s OLED TVs. Well, it was quite a significant deal given the fact that the two companies are competitors. It now appears like the companies have decided to extend their deal.
Samsung may utilize LG’s OLED panels in its TVs in the future
According to a report by DigiTimes, Samsung DX and LG Display have signed a five-year deal. Samsung DX is the company’s division that is associated with the production as well as sales of TVs. The company will now use LG Display’s WRGB OLED panels in some of its TVs for the next five years. Samsung Display, the company’s display division, is known for its expertise in manufacturing QD-OLED panels. Compared to LG Display, the options for panel sizes are limited. In an effort to fill up this gap, the company is relying on LG’s OLED panels.
In 2023, the company debuted the 83-inch S95C, which is based on LG’s WRGB OLED panel. The other versions of the TV, including the 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch, feature Samsung Display’s QD-OLED panel. In 2024, the company introduced three OLED TVs, including the S85D, S90D, and S95D. LG’s OLED screens are probably used in some of these ultra-small and ultra-large TVs. Samsung may have incorporated LG’s most recent OLED panels with MLA (Micro Lens Array), which raises the brightness levels, but this still needs to be discovered.
There is a significant difference between the OLED panels manufactured by LG Display and Samsung Display. Four sub-pixels—red, green, blue, and white—are used by LG Display’s OLED panels, whereas the QD-OLED panels by Samsung use three sub-pixels: red, green, and blue. Deeper colors can be seen on Samsung’s panel because the white color that is employed as a workaround for higher brightness does not affect the pixel. Samsung is a relatively new player in the OLED TV panel market, and in some tests, its panels perform worse than LG’s.
