Samsung CPUs To Be Equipped In Volkswagen Electric Cars

Anyone who drives one of the youngest vehicles from the Volkswagen brand can now blame the poor performance of the touchscreen on a new culprit: Samsung. The Korean electronics giant is now supplying its CPUs for use in cars for the ID series. Earlier it was also reported that Samsung is looking to close a deal with Tesla to supply CPUs, sensors, batteries, OLED Screens, and more.

As the Korean portal MK reports, Samsung started supplying Volkswagen with its automotive platforms in early 2021. With the acquisition of VW as a customer, Samsung’s chip division has landed the world’s largest automaker. A few years ago, the VW subsidiary Audi began to be supplied with chips for use in their vehicles.

According to the report, Volkswagen is being supplied by Samsung with the Exynos Auto V9, which is an Octa-core SoC manufactured in the Group’s own production facilities. The chip is built on an 8-nanometer scale and shouldn’t have any problems, at least in terms of CPU performance, in offering good performance in the car.

8 high-end cores in the CPU

The Samsung Exynos Auto V9 has eight ARM Cortex-A76 cores, which Samsung combined with a Mali-G76MP18 graphics unit and a neural processing unit. The SoC supports up to six displays and is therefore used to feed the multimedia and navigation system, the cockpit display, and to record the vehicle status.

The image processing processor should be able to process the data from up to 12 cameras installed in the vehicle and can handle 4K videos with up to 120 frames per second. The chip can be equipped with eight high-performance cores thanks to the better cooling options in automotive use.

Like some other suppliers, Samsung is working on expanding its range of automotive chips. The performance of the onboard systems in VW cars, criticized by many testers, is more likely to be related to a lack of coordination with the underlying platform or other factors because it is probably not due to the performance of the Octacore SoCs from Samsung.
