Samsung Electronics completes the LCA on product carbon footprint for its semiconductors

DNV is one of the most well-known independent certification bodies. Recently, DNV awarded Samsung Electronics a certificate for LCA on the product carbon footprint for its semiconductors. Just recently, it was announced by Samsung Electronics that it has been done with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on the carbon footprint of its semiconductors.

Basically, LCA is a measure that quantifies the environmental impacts of marketable services, products, and processes. It is based on different parameters. These parameters comprise energy, waste discharge, and materials used in these products or services. The LCA by Samsung revolves around raw materials through the manufacturing of chips, their assembly, and finally testing. All these procedures are in line with ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and ISO 14067.

The semiconductor products by the South Korean tech giant that have received the carbon footprint certifications range from around thirty-seven. These authentications have been received from Carbon Trust and UL since 2019. Out of these 37, 6 memory products by Samsung receive accreditation from Carbon Trust. The company has mentioned in its official blog that it will expand the evaluation and analysis of carbon footprints of semiconductors that are manufactured, tested, and assembled across the globe [the U.S., China, and South Korea]. Furthermore, the company will enlarge its LCA profile by including the water and resources footprints. It will aid in providing a granular calculation. Thus, helping to limit the environmental impact.

The CEO of DNV Business Assurance Korea, JangSup Lee, mentioned that we will continue our efforts for a sustainable environment in collaboration with top business leaders like Samsung. Through these efforts, the tech company targets to achieve the carbon neutrality demands of its consumers. Thus, playing its part in a sustainable environment.
