Samsung Galaxy S27: Ultra model in Europe allegedly with Exynos CPU

Samsung is said to have decided at the last minute to use its new top chip Exynos 2700 in Europe in the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The Korean electronics giant appears to have high hopes for the performance and efficiency of the 2nm processor.

Last minute change of plans?

Actually, it should only be around four months until the Galaxy S27 series is launched. Now it appears that Samsung is once again making fundamental changes at the last minute. The Korean manufacturer apparently wants to use its own platform for the top model Galaxy S27 Ultra in some regions such as Europe. According to a report from the Korean portal MoneyToday Samsung actually wanted to rely entirely on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which is officially expected in just under three weeks, for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, i.e. the latest top SoC from US supplier Qualcomm. This would have kept to its tradition of equipping the top model of Samsung’s high-end series with the most powerful chip on the market.

Just conjured up a new motherboard for the S27 Ultra

As the Korean portal claims to have learned from insiders, Samsung recently changed course within a very short period of time. The mobile device division Samsung MX and the chip division Samsung LSI have developed a new motherboard for the Galaxy S27 Ultra that uses a variant of the Samsung Exynos 2700 instead of the Qualcomm chip.

At the same time, Samsung’s semiconductor division is reportedly also working to ensure sufficient availability of the Exynos 2700. Apparently Samsung is confident that with the new top SoC developed and manufactured in-house, it will be able to keep up with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon in the top model of its smartphone line-up.

USA gets Snapdragon, Europe gets Exynos

For this reason, Samsung should now also use the tactics known from previous years from the cheaper models of the respective flagship series with the Galaxy S27 Ultra. In the USA, all models of the S27 series, which has been expanded to four devices, will come with the new Snapdragon SoCs from Qualcomm, while in Europe and South Korea almost exclusively Exynos processors will be installed – including the Ultra. MoneyToday also cites sources close to Samsung who consider the last-minute adaptation of the Exynos 2700 in the European models of the Galaxy S27 Ultra to be extremely unusual.

The background is that the development of the Snapdragon-based European version was almost completely completed. The fact that Samsung is using the Exynos in a Galaxy S Ultra model is also unusual, as Samsung’s own processor was last used in the Galaxy S22 Ultra in 2022. According to previous reports, the new Exynos 2700 is manufactured using a state-of-the-art, improved 2-nanometer-class process that should achieve up to 15 percent higher clock speeds, while theoretically reducing power consumption by more than a quarter.
