Samsung is turning its latest Galaxy Watch 4 series smartwatches into a walkie-talkie with a recently released app. As with a simple two-way radio, owners of the new “smart” watches can talk to one another at the touch of a button.
The walkie-talkie app from Samsung, recently published in the Google Play Store according to XDA, unfortunately only works in connection with the models of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic that has just been launched on the market. Therefore, only owners of these devices can talk to each other because older Galaxy Watches or other Smartwatches are not supported.
Allegedly, the walkie-talkie function works even when no smartphone is connected. All you have to do is pair it briefly with another user’s smartwatch. You can then simply press a microphone button to start the voice transmission.
The small app offers access to several contacts and is of course only activated when required. How it all works is currently unclear. However, Samsung requires you to log in with a Samsung account in order to use it and promises that you can communicate with friends, colleagues, or family members who are on the contact list.
So whether communication takes place via Bluetooth or WLAN connection, for example via Adhoc WLAN or the like, is open. Theoretically, only those people in the immediate vicinity could be reached via Bluetooth at a maximum distance of 10 to 30 meters. On the other hand, it would of course also be useful to be able to “address” contacts directly over the Internet via WLAN or the connected smartphone.
A few years ago, Apple introduced a similar feature with the Apple Watch Series 4, in which communication is handled via FaceTime. The connection between the smartwatches of several users must first be made by entering a PIN. The new walkie-talkie app for the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is available from the Google Play Store.
