The tech industry is changing with every passing day. More and more new products with advanced features and specs are now available in the market. One such example is the Vision Pro headset. It is estimated that the MR/VR headset market will further expand in the upcoming years. Another major player Meta is already selling millions of Quest headset annually. Samsung, on the other hand, is about to join the market later this year.
When it comes to AR/MR/VR headsets display panels, there are generally two types. One being the Micro OLED and the OLEDoS. Apple’s Vision Pro used Micro OLED panels. However, it is expected that the Samsung’s MR headset will use OLEDoS panels. At MWC 2024, Samsung Display featured its OLEDoS panel. Besides this, the company is also working on Micro OLED panels. However, the Micro OLED panels from Samsung require some time to arrive in the market.
The CEO of Samsung Display, Choi Joo-sun, asserts that the Micro OLED market is expected to grow within the next 3-4 years. In the next two to three years, Choi stated, “We will devote our human resources to guaranteeing that Samsung Display stays ahead of the competition in the micro OLED market and to introducing competitive solutions.” This strategy also includes the acquisition of the American display company eMagin. Last year, Samsung Display paid $218 million (about KRW 290.9 billion) to acquire eMagin in the US.
The South Korean tech giant Samsung is trying to recruit talented students from local universities specifically for the Micro OLED segment. From this perspective, it was the second lecture by Choi at the university. Seoul National University, hosted a special lecture by him in November 2023 in an effort to draw talent.
