Samsung Plans For Big 6G Internet

For now, it is all quite technical and above all theoretical, but Samsung has big plans for a new 6G generation in which it intends to pioneer.

In the consumer electronics industry and mobile devices, Samsung is shining brighter than ever, and within this aura of positivity and innovation, it seems that the Suwon giant also wants to anticipate part of that promising future which will mean the arrival of some 6G networks in which Samsung wants to be a pioneer. Currently, there are many companies like Spectrum Mobile which offer unlimited voice and data in 4G and 5G capacities, but the said 6G is going to be expensive. This is how it is understood that Sunghyun Choi, executive vice president, and director of the Advanced Communications Research Center of Samsung Research, wanted to now present us your 6G white paper with the first advances and its research, which in the words of Samsung itself “will expand the frontier”.

6G networks will officially welcome the ‘Terabit’ revolution. The ambition and Samsung’s involvement are very important and it is that with the fall from grace of Huawei the near future that promised us holotransport, blockchain, and many autonomous robots had been a bit on standby, waiting for new actors and new proposals for the connectivity of the future. Now it is Samsung that takes the initiative, and indeed everything seems to remain as promising as expected since the beginning:

We started our journey long ago to understand, develop and standardize 6G communications technology. We are committed to taking the lead and sharing our findings to spread our vision of bringing the next hyperconnected experience to every corner of life. Sunghyun Choi, VP and Director of Samsung Research.

This will be the 6G revolution: holo transport, blockchain, and many autonomous robots

How to understand the spectrum of 6G communications and the needs that it will imply

The first thing that Samsung explains to us in its documents is that 6G will require contiguous ultra-wide bandwidth ranging from hundreds of megahertz to tens of gigahertz, which will make it possible to offer new high-availability services such as high fidelity holographic communication or extended reality truly immersive.

All these services require ultra-high speed, minimal latencies, and a large amount of data transmitted, so another of the great needs will be that of improving coverage to always offer the best connection quality. Thus, Samsung’s proposal cannot be other than considering all available bands for 6G from the spectrum below 1 GHz to the mid band in the 1-24 GHz and the upper band between 24 and 300 GHz. It is also mentioned in the white paper the need for 5G and 6G networks to coexist and the importance of ensuring new exclusive bands for the new generation, as well as the reorganization of existing bands used for 3G, 4G, and 5G to obtain all the necessary spectrum. Many advances for a Samsung that leads the change

Without going into too many technicalities, in which obviously Samsung has focused on completing the ‘white book’ with its investigations, the truth is that the South Korean giant already has interesting advances in candidate technologies for 6Gespecially with regard to sub-THz band communications (in the range of 92 to 300 GHz), duplex and cross-split duplex communications and AI implementations for non-linearity compensation and power saving.

Samsung pulls us from speeds up to 1 terabit per second (Tbps) that would be about 50 times faster than those offered by 5G networks, having already successfully tested speeds of up to 12 Gbps at a distance of 30 meters in laboratories. Other technologies such as RIS advance in the improvement of the sharpness of the beams and carriers being able to reflect the wireless signal in the desired direction with new metamaterials, as well as increase the propagation distance with cross-division duplex (XDD) using self-interference cancellation at the base station.

Many of the advances have already been tested in laboratory conditions by Samsung, although obviously completing its development and bringing it to standardization will take at least until the end of the decade.

Samsung says that 6G technology should ensure full-duplex connections with Simultaneous transmission and reception of data using the same frequency something that Samsung has already tried also in the mmWave band at a laboratory distance of 100 meters. Regarding the Artificial intelligence in Suwon, they are working with the new implementations AI-NC and AI-ES, which they intend in the first case to compensate for signal distortion by significantly improving coverage, and in the second, the automatic adjustment of the parameters that control the switching on and off of the selected cells according to the traffic load, looking for a consumption improvement both in the terminal and in the base stations.

All quite technical and for now theoretical, although Samsung warns that they will continue to report on their progress in upcoming events, surely even showing 6G connectivity pilots in the future… Has anyone said Mobile World Congress 2023?
