Samsung SDI might produce new batteries with Chinese machinery

According to some recent pieces of information, Samsung SDI has been preparing to build a production line for lithium iron phosphate batteries. Compared to other options, lithium iron phosphorus batteries offer longer life and improved charge efficiency. In Cheonan, South Korea, the company held a conference to highlight its future plans for vendors.

Besides this, a new report from South Korea reveals that the company’s battery manufacturing branch, Samsung SDI, might source equipment from Chinese vendors for establishing the new battery production line.

Production might begin in 2025

Kapjin and Wonik, the Korean vendors, were also present at the conference in Cheonan, along with other suppliers. Both vendors have been supplying materials to Samsung SDI for years. Zhejiang Hangke and Lead Intelligence were also present during the conference. The main agenda of the meeting was to engage back-end equipment manufacturers. Perhaps the company will place an order for manufacturing equipment this year. The installation is expected to begin in 2025.

According to the report, the company might construct a new production line in Ulsan. Lead Intelligence and Zhejiang Hangke, the Chinese suppliers, are known to offer the equipment at a competitive cost, which increases their chances of receiving the order. However, this is not a guarantee as of yet. Hangke already collaborates with SK On and LG Energy Solutions, two Korean battery producers. Chinese battery manufacturers produce the majority of lithium iron phosphate batteries. These batteries are commonly utilized in electric automobiles, such as the well-known Tesla models.
