Samsung Working Again On Bixby AI Assistant

Samsung reportedly wants to upgrade its in-house voice assistant Bixby and possibly even make it a selling point for its upcoming smartphones. Until now, Bixby has had a rather shadowy existence for many customers. This should change with LLM integration. @Jukanlosreve

Unpopular Bixby

Samsung’s own voice assistant Bixby was first released in March 2017 for devices in the then-new Galaxy S8 series. The app is intended to provide users with information on request, similar to other assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri, and can use an augmented reality camera to identify objects or control compatible smart home devices.

However, Bixby cannot be described as a great success. Especially at the beginning, the assistant wasn’t convincing. Many users often activated it accidentally by accidentally pressing the corresponding button and were happy when the app could finally be deactivated.

Second chance for the assistant

Bixby is now reportedly making its big comeback with the release of the Galaxy S25 series smartphones on January 22nd at an Unpacked event in San Francisco. Because how ETNews reports, Samsung is planning a second attempt with its assistant.

To achieve this, the app needs to be properly spruced up. Bixby is expected to follow a similar development to Siri, which will become significantly ‘smarter’ with the help of Large Language Models (LLMs) as part of Apple’s AI offensive under iOS 18. Samsung also wants to achieve this with its assistant.

Better integration

According to the information, Bixby, like Gemini or ChatGPT, should be able to communicate interactively with users and be deeply integrated into the Android system of the devices. This should also allow the AI to capture information from the screen or link data from other apps such as the calendar or contacts for its answers.

The new Bixby should actually be ready for the market launch of the foldables Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 in the summer of this year. However, there were probably delays, so the introduction of the renewed assistant will now probably take place with the release of the S25 series.
