Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Heads to Virtual Reality

After almost a decade of waiting, fans of the 4X genre are finally getting their hands on the next chapter in Firaxis Games’ beloved Civilization series this week with the release of Civilization VII. But there’s even more exciting news—publisher 2K has just announced a new way to experience the game: virtual reality.

The VR version will be available exclusively on Meta’s Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets. A brand-new VR announcement trailer was revealed during the Civ World Summit livestream, and you can check it out above.

While full gameplay for the VR version hasn’t been shared yet, the trailer suggests an immersive, top-down, tabletop-like perspective. PlaySide Studios is leading the development of this VR port in collaboration with Firaxis Games.

Meta describes the experience as one where players can “peer down from high above the Command Table to strategize your moves or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of your scouts, cities, armies, and Wonders.” Players will be able to watch their empires grow from a personalized museum vista or toggle into mixed reality, where the Command Table integrates seamlessly into their physical surroundings.

Civilization leaders will also make appearances around the table, engaging in diplomacy and strategic decision-making. A dedicated space called The Archives will allow players to revisit their civilization’s history and track achievements.

The VR version will feature a faster default game speed, designed so players can complete a full session in one sitting. The speed is customizable to fit individual preferences, and multiplayer support is also confirmed.
