SK Hynix and Samsung are separately working on on-sensor AI technology
According to some recent pieces of information from Korean media, SK Hynix and Samsung are working on incorporating on-device AI features into image sensors. Well, this was quite expected given the immense powers and capabilities of AI.
Samsung and SK Hynix are working on AI cameras
SK Hynix is working on on-sensor AI technology for cameras. The information was unveiled last month during the SK Tech Summit 2023, reports Business Korea. The basic idea behind this technology is the incorporation of an exclusive AI chip within the image sensor. For AI apps, the chip can handle image data at the sensor level. The main processor is used by current solutions to process and compute sensor data.
With the help of new technology, usage of power and processing time would be reduced, which will eventually offer advanced camera solutions for smart home appliances. Research on proof-of-concept for facial and object recognition characteristics has already started at SK Hynix. It presented its findings at a number of scholarly events, such as the IEEE EDTM seminar and the International Conference on Computer Vision.
On the other hand, the South Korean tech giant Samsung has not revealed its ongoing work on AI to the public. However, the Business Korea report indicates that the tech company is working to incorporate AI into image sensors. One of the first indications of Samsung’s efforts is indicated in the zoom feature for the 200MP cameras, termed Zoom Anyplace. It was introduced early this year, and with automatic object tracking, it enables the simultaneous viewing and recording of full-view and zoomed-in footage.
