Skype blocked in UAE

Skype has been blocked in UAE. It is a popular app that enables its users to make voice and video calls. Skype can be downloaded and used on desktops, mobile phones, and tablets.

As per UAE-based telecom company Etisalat, the reason for blocking Skype in UAE is due to unlicensed VoIP calls.

Etisalat said, “The access to the Skype app is blocked since it is providing unlicensed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Service, which falls under the classification of prohibited contents as per the United Arab Emirates’ Regulatory Framework.”

A statement issued by Skype states, “It has been brought to our attention that our website and services have been blocked by the ISPs in the UAE. That means you won’t be able to use Skype in the UAE.”

Skype users in UAE faced many issues as they complained:

SenpaiPlays a user on Reddi said, “I’m on Etisalat with a 50mbps package. I’m wired with about 54mbps of speed but I’ve noticed in the last few hours that Skype…call quality is abysmal. I can’t hear a thing.”

Another user stated, “I tried to call my only friend the Skype Echo voice thing and it didn’t work either.”

Now that Skype has been blocked in UAE, what are the alternate options for UAE users?

Telecom providers in UAE have assured users that there are other legal ways and apps through which they can remain connected with their friends and family. Both du and Etisalat are offering Botim and C’Me which are VoIP-based apps. These apps will provide “unlimited” voice and video call services to the users.
