Skype Sees Massive Increase in Usage as COVID-19 Spreads

In an effort to slow the scourge of COVID-19, people are staying in-doors and practice self-isolation to the pandemic. Online apps are seeing a massive surge in usage, whether it be a social application or a chat app for colleagues, working remotely.

According to the reports, Microsoft says that its video chat and calling app Skype sees a torrent of interest. The company reports that 40 million people are using Skype daily, with 70% of the users from just a month ago. It has also witnessed a 220% increase in Skype-to-Skype calls. In the past six months, Microsoft has tallied active Skype users around 200 million.

Yusuf Mehdi, a Microsoft VP said: “Staying connected with our loved ones has never been more important than it is right now.” He further said that the new feature “Meet Now” lets users create video meetups through their internet browsers, without forcing participants to sign up or download software.

The latest stats indicate the fact of how many people rely on the internet for work and pleasure. So, they’ve turned to video chat apps such as Zoom, Whatsapp, Apple’s FaceTime, Microsoft Teams and Skype to keep in touch.

In the coming days, governments are expanding the deadlines against COVID-19 pandemic. So, the numbers are highly expected to go up.
