If you were thinking Qualcomm is merely producing chips for smartphones, you need to keep this piece of news. Up until now, we were no different from you. We also never thought that the company would have a separate line of chips for other devices, such as laptops. But this latest news opened our eyes when the company announced the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3.
At the recent Snapdragon Technology Summit in Kona, Hawaii, Qualcomm introduced some chipsets for a line of smart devices. Two of them include the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 and the Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3. Both offer better performance than their predecessors.
Talking about the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, it’s the first 5nm chipset for Windows PCs. It offers up to 85% faster CPU performance and 60% faster GPU performance than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2.
This chipset has eight cores. Four of them come from Kryo, while the other four come from Cortex-A78. This chip also gets over 29 TOPS and offers three times better AI performance than its predecessor.
There are some drawbacks as well. One of the major ones is the missing of an integrated 5G modem. The reason for the company not using this technology could be the increased cost, which isn’t very suitable for laptop users.
During a session, Miguel Nunes, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc said:
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 builds on the technology that has transformed the PC industry, delivering premium experiences with breakthrough performance per watt, immersive camera and audio with enhanced AI-acceleration, lightning-fast 5G connectivity, and chip-to-cloud security in thin, fanless systems.
