Sony announces Cloud streaming To PlayStation Portal

Sony has announced a surprising new addition to its new PlayStation Portal: The device will now also support cloud streaming, a feature that many users have missed since the handheld’s launch a year ago. Sony

Update brings beta

With a system update that has now been deployed, Sony is introducing the feature in a beta phase. However, the update is currently only available to users in certain countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and various other European countries. Additionally, an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required to participate in the beta program.

During the beta, users can choose from 120 PlayStation 5 games that can be streamed at up to 1080p and 60 FPS. Features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, motion sensors, and touchpad are retained in games that support these technologies. Saves are synced via PlayStation Plus cloud storage.

To use cloud streaming, the following minimum requirements apply:

  • PlayStation Portal Remote Player
  • PlayStation Network account and PlayStation Plus Premium membership
  • Broadband internet with at least 5 Mbps for connection (7 Mbps for 720p, 13 Mbps for 1080p)

After the update, users can activate the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” option in the settings, which will cause a corresponding menu to appear on the home screen.

Beta limitations

The cloud streaming function is limited to PlayStation 5 games. Older generation titles such as PS3 or PS4 games, in-game purchases and some system functions such as party voice chat or game trials are not yet supported. Functions such as the create button and 3D audio are currently still missing, but corresponding expansions will follow before the final version.

With the introduction of cloud streaming, Sony is making the PlayStation Portal more attractive for many players – especially, of course, because A connection to your own Playstation 5 is not always necessary. While the beta phase still has limitations, the innovation is likely to be a decisive step in further developing the platform and making the gaming experience more flexible.
