Sony buys ‘Destiny’ game studio Bungie for $3.6bn

Bungie is a veteran game developer who created”Destiny” as well as the “Destiny” as well as the “Halo” franchises and is now being bought from Playstation producer Sony in a deal that is worth $3.6 billion in a move that will continue consolidating the game industry. The announcement was made on Monday. Sony Interactive Entertainment has signed a deal to acquire Bungie. The $3.6 billion deal, which includes the price of the purchase and incentives for employees will put Bungie’s “Destiny” Studio under the control of Sony.

Bungie Bellevue located in WA, Bungie is expected to continue to be an independent studio following the agreement’s conclusion as well as be able to self-publish its titles. Even though Sony possesses its own PlayStation platform Bungie will not be impeded from publishing on other platforms including Microsoft’s Xbox. “First foremost, I would like to make it clear to the public that Bungie remains an independent, multi-platform studio also a publisher,” writes SIE’s President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan. “As so, we believe it is logical to join PlayStation Studios.” PlayStation Studios organization and we’re extremely enthusiastic about the possibilities to collaborate and synergies with these two top companies.”

“In SIE, we have found a partner who is with us and will increase our efforts to create authentic entertainment experiences for all ages and all while respecting the creativity and independence that are the foundation of Bungie,” said Bungie CEO and Chairman Pete Parsons. The deal is still awaiting regulatory approval as well as other conditions before it can be fully closed. The announcement comes during an era of consolidation in the gaming industry as several major acquisitions are in the process.

Bungie is most famous for launching its “Halo” as well as the “Destiny” games, however, Bungie has a long association with macOS too. The company’s first ventures were “Gnop,” “Minotaur,” “Operation Desert Storm,” and “Pathways into Darkness” prior to launching the Mac-gamers popular “Marathon” series as well as “Myth.” The company also presented “Halo” on a Mac during a WWDC. On the 10th of January, Take-Two Interactive said it was working on buying the mobile gaming giant Zynga in the form of a $12.7 billion acquisition. In the course of the month on the 18th of January Microsoft announced that it had reached an agreement to buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion this makes it the third-largest gaming firm by revenue in the world.
