Sony has to stop producing memory cards

Following extremely high prices, the ongoing crisis in the storage market is now also having consequences for availability. The Japanese electronics giant Sony says it can no longer supply many memory cards.

Photographers and other (professional) customers who use various types of memory cards must obviously assume that it is becoming increasingly difficult to expect the products they need. SonyJapan has now been announced that the production and distribution of various memory card products cannot be continued in the current form. In a statement on its website, the company said that due to massive bottlenecks in the flash memory market, it is no longer expected to be able to adequately meet demand for SD and CFexpress memory cards. Sony therefore does not want to accept any further orders for such products from authorized dealers and private customers for the time being.

Almost the entire range is affected

In the case of Sony, the discontinuation of the distribution of memory cards apparently affects almost the entire range of CFexpress A, CFexpress B and SD memory cards. Loud PetaPixels Type A cards with 240, 480, 960 and 1920 gigabytes are no longer available, as are Type B cards with 240 and 480 gigabytes. The entire range of high-end SD cards from the Tough series as well as the “normal” SD cards with Sony branding are apparently no longer available. Apparently it doesn’t matter whether the cards are cards with capacities of 64, 128, 256 or 512 gigabytes.

Sony currently only seems to be able to supply a few memory cards, which applies to the CFexpress Type-B memory card with 960 GB and the low-end SD cards from the SF-UZ series. However, due to Sony’s recent strategy, the latter will probably no longer be available in many countries anyway. Sony Japan’s announcement also applies to Germany and Europe, which is why the manufacturer will probably no longer be able to serve the local markets. Sony’s memory cards, which are often aimed at professional users, are still occasionally available from German retailers, but this is likely to change very soon – after all, there are no supplies.
