Starfield: New vehicle and release of Shattered Space

Bethesda presented exciting news for Starfield fans at Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live. The long-awaited expansion “Shattered Space” will be released on September 30, 2024 for Xbox and PC. But that’s not the only surprise the developer has in store for players. Starfield enthusiasts can already download a free update today that brings the equally long-awaited planetary vehicle Rev-8 into the game.

This new means of transport promises to make exploring the vast planetary surfaces much easier and more exciting. The design of the Rev-8 is very reminiscent of the Mako vehicle from the Mass Effect series. It has hover capabilities that allow the player to overcome larger obstacles. The vehicle is also equipped with a weapon, which suggests possible battles during planetary exploration. To gain access to the Rev-8, players simply need to speak to their ship technician.

The introduction of the Rev-8 addresses one of the most frequently voiced criticisms of Starfield. Many players complained about the lack of ground vehicles, which made exploring the sprawling planets tedious. Todd Howard, the game’s director, initially justified this with the presence of a jetpack – an explanation that was met with little understanding by many fans.

What awaits us in Shattered Space?

As for the upcoming DLC ”Shattered Space”, it promises a dark and mysterious atmosphere. The expansion focuses on the mysterious faction “House Va’ruun”, which is described as a “strange space cult”. The followers of this cult believe in an “eternal space serpent”, an aspect that was only mentioned in passing in the main game.

The short teaser trailer for “Shattered Space” hints at a foray into cosmic horror stories. Players will be confronted with ghost-like apparitions and must investigate a “terrifying cosmic threat”. The expansion takes players to a new planet and the city of Dazra, where they must explore abandoned facilities and face ghost-like enemies. In addition to the new story, “Shattered Space” also promises new weapons, spacesuits, and equipment. The Rev-8 is expected to play an important role in the new campaign missions, as the trailer suggests.

Access and prices

The good news for owners of the Premium and Constellation editions of Starfield is that they will get immediate access to the expansion when it is released. For all other players, Bethesda is currently offering a 33 percent discount on the base game – the biggest price cut for Starfield yet. The Premium Edition is also 30 percent off, while the Creations add-on remains available at full price.

Continuous improvements

Despite the mixed reviews of the release – especially due to numerous bugs – Bethesda is continuously working on improvements for Starfield. With the introduction of the Rev-8 and the upcoming expansion “Shattered Space”, the development studio shows that it is listening to the community’s feedback and is committed to further improving the gaming experience. It remains to be seen how “Shattered Space” fits into the existing Starfield story.

It is also unclear whether the expansion is set before or after the various endings of the main game. Interestingly, the Xbox Series S also receives new visual settings with the update, suggesting additional optimization for the less powerful consoles. What do you think of the news about Starfield?
