Steam is losing support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

Last year, in March, Steam announced that it would end support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 next year. More specifically, the company mentioned that the support will end for Steam Client on January 1, 2024. Well, the deadline has approached and there will be no official support from the company for these operating systems.

The support page of Steam indicates that there will be no software or security updates on the current Steam Client installations on these operating systems. In addition to this, the company states that the support team won’t be able to resolve problems relevant to old operating systems. There is no guarantee on whether Steam will continue to function on the unsupported versions of the operating system or not.

The reason behind ending support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

The company states that some of the core functions of Steam depend on an embedded version of Google Chrome. Such features are not supported on older versions of Windows. For this reason, the company opted to end support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. “Future versions of Steam will necessitate Windows feature and security updates that are only available in Windows 10 and above,” the company adds.

According to the Steam Hardware & Software Survey for December 2023, only 0.89% of users are using the above-mentioned older versions of Windows. It means that the latest change will only impact a small number of users. After January 1, 2024, the Steam client and games are anticipated to function on these operating systems “for some time,” according to the firm. So, it is highly recommended to upgrade your OS if you wish to continue using Steam without any problems.
