Stranger Things 4 will be the biggest hit in Netflix history

Stranger Things could soon dethrone Squid Game to become the most-watched series on Netflix of all time. The series is now the second series in the history of the streaming giant with more than a billion viewing hours, Variety reports.

Stranger Things 4, the final season of the hit series, has just become the second Netflix series to have over a billion hours watched. Indeed, since the first episode of the season aired on May 27, viewers have spent 1.15 billion cumulative hours watching all nine episodes of the season, including 301 million hours last weekend to mark the final two episodes.

As a reminder, only one series had managed to exceed the one billion viewing hour bar until now: Squid Game. Stranger Things isn’t far behind now, though, and is on track to be Netflix’s biggest hit ever. As a reminder, Stranger Things season 4 had already set a new viewing record for the most-watched program in a week.

The old seasons of Stranger Things are also a hit

Season 4’s anticipation has likely sparked the interest of audiences unfamiliar with the series since all four seasons of Stranger Things were among the six most-watched series on Netflix this weekend, only The Umbrella Academy has been able to follow. Season 1 was watched 34.5 million hours, while Season 2 and 3 last week were watched 30.3 million hours, respectively. Stranger Things ends with its fifth and final season.

In anticipation of the sequel, which the creators say should come sooner than expected, they’ve already revealed important information about Season 5, including the length of the episodes. There is also a spin-off series in the making which will be very different from what fans expect. “I’ve read these rumors that there will be an Elf spin-off, a Steve and Dustin spin-off, or some other issue,” the Duffer Brothers said. “It’s not interesting to me because we’ve all done that. We spent I don’t know how many hours exploring it all. So it’s going to be very different.”
