Sun will be ‘Unusually Cool’ & ‘Mini Ice age’ will hit the Earth Soon

A new research from scientists indicates that our sun can get highly dim in years to come. Such conditions might create a ‘mini ice age’. The researchers have tracked sun’s 11-year cycle.

It is a known fact that sun circles via an 11-year cycle. We can relate this cycle to a heartbeat where the sun goes through active & quiet times that are generally called solar maximum and solar minimum.

The University of California, San Diego scientists have now identified the time when the new solar minimum will take place. They believe that sun will become ‘unusually cool’ around 2050. They have called this upcoming period ‘grand minimum.’ The conditions that were witnessed in Europe during the mid-17th century might just repeat.

That time it was called ‘Maunder Minimum,’ where the temperature got so low that London’s River Thames got frozen. Furthermore, Baltic Sea also froze, & so it became quite easy for the Swedish Army to invade Denmark in the year 1658. They marched on foot over ice & captured Denmark. As per the scientists, it seems that the in 2050 the sun will experience a similar situation.

Physicist Dan Lubin who was the main person behind this discovery believes that we may witness worse experiences & worse weather than that sees at the Maunder Minimum time. The sun will get much dimmer, that usually seen during the solar minimum.

As per scientists, a ‘significant probability’ is of a grand minimum quite soon, as the sunspot patterns suggest this.

It is pertinent to mention here that in solar maximum, the magnetic loops increase because of nuclear fusion while in solar minimum the sun magnetism decrease. Because of this, the sun’s surface gets dimmer.

As per the researchers, the sun will most probably get 7% colder than its minimum point in the 11-year cycle. As the sun will get dimmer the first immediate effect on Earth will be that the ozone layer will get thinner.

The study reveals, ‘That thinning, in turn, changes the temperature structure of the stratosphere, which then changes the dynamics of the lower atmosphere, especially wind and weather patterns.’

It must be noted that the whole Earth will not get cool. As during the Maunder Minimum period, Europe got cold while Alaska and southern Greenland got warmer.

Furthermore relating to reducing global warming scientists believe, ‘The cooling effect of a grand minimum is only a fraction of the warming effect caused by the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.’
