Super Mario: New set with movable Yoshi

Lego and Nintendo are bringing a pixelated duo into the third dimension with “Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi”. The new set brings the 1990 SNES classic to life – with moving elements and nostalgic charm. Lego Lego and Nintendo are continuing their collaboration. The latest result of this cooperation is the set “Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi” (Set 71438)which transfers the legendary SNES classic from 1990 into the three-dimensional world of blocks.

A pile of pixels you can touch

With 1,215 pieces, the set represents a real challenge for building enthusiasts. When assembled, it measures 40 cm in height, 26 cm in width and 11 cm in depth – definitely an eye-catcher for any gaming room. The front of the model is a faithful replica of the characters from Super Mario World. Mario sits on Yoshi’s back with his yellow cape, while the green dino moves across a grassy hill.

Movement in the game

But Lego wouldn’t be Lego if they hadn’t gone one step further: If you turn a crank on the base of the model, movement comes into play. Yoshi’s legs start to walk while his body moves up and down – just as if he were hopping through the Mushroom Kingdom. An additional button on the back even makes Yoshi’s tongue dart out. These mechanisms give the set an additional dimension and make it more than just a static display piece. The back of the model gives a glimpse of the inner workings and shows how the movements are achieved.

Who is the set intended for?

With a price of 129.99 euros (OVP), the set is clearly aimed at an adult audience. It is part of the growing collection of Lego sets that are specifically aimed at AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego). This target group not only appreciates the fun of building, but also the nostalgia factor and the opportunity to bring a piece of their childhood into the living room. Lego is thus hitting the nerve of the times. Many people who grew up with Super Mario World in the 90s are now in a phase of life in which they like to reminisce and are prepared to dig a little deeper into their pockets for it.

Easter Egg for collectors

For those who already own other sets from the Lego Super Mario series, there is a little extra: The set contains a so-called “Action Tag” that is compatible with the interactive figures from the Lego Super Mario, Luigi or Peach starter sets. What exactly happens when you place the figures on it remains to be seen – but it should definitely be a nice gimmick for collectors.

Classification in the Lego-Nintendo cooperation

“Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi” joins a growing list of collaborations between Lego and Nintendo. It all started in 2020 with a detailed replica of the NES. This was followed by sets such as the mighty Bowser, the Piranha Plant and the ? Block. With each new set, the designers seem to further increase their creativity and technical skills.

Conclusion

The new Lego set “Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi” is a successful homage to a video game classic. It combines nostalgia, technical finesse and the typical Lego charm into a complete package that should appeal to both collectors and hobbyists. The set will be available from October 1, 2024 – both in the Lego online shop and at selected retailers worldwide (see WinFuture price comparison for this set).
