Surprising Turnaround for Steam Deck Owners: Assassin’s Creed Shadows Confirmed to Run

Good News for Steam Deck Gamers

Steam Deck owners can finally breathe a sigh of relief! Contrary to earlier announcements, Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will indeed run on Valve’s handheld gaming PC. The surprising update came after Ubisoft submitted the game for classification by Valve. Fans can now hope that the game may be marked as “playable” or even “verified” for the Steam Deck upon launch.

This news is particularly unexpected since, just a few weeks ago, Ubisoft had stated that the Steam Deck didn’t meet the minimum system requirements for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Back then, the publisher had ruled out support for the platform at launch. However, it seems Ubisoft has had a change of heart due to overwhelming fan demand. According to PCGAMESN, Ubisoft made the announcement via their official Assassin’s Creed account on X (formerly Twitter).

Questions Still Linger

While this is exciting news for Steam Deck users, there are still some concerns. Just because the game has been submitted for classification doesn’t guarantee smooth performance on the device. Experts predict that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will likely only run on the lowest graphics settings, given its demanding nature.

The game is a graphically advanced, next-generation title that won’t even launch on older consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One. Furthermore, the PC version excludes ray tracing, highlighting the intense system requirements. For the three-year-old Steam Deck, which launched in February 2022, this could pose significant challenges.

A Popular Platform for Gamers

Despite initial skepticism, the Steam Deck has quickly become a beloved platform for PC gaming. It has carved out a unique niche with its portability and ability to play PC games on the go, competing with platforms like the Nintendo Switch. While Assassin’s Creed Shadows may push the Steam Deck to its limits, the handheld’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down.
