Tana Emerges from Stealth with $25M Funding to Revolutionize Productivity with AI

In today’s working world, simplifying to-do lists and managing tasks effectively remains an ongoing challenge. That’s where Tana, a new productivity startup, aims to make a difference. Combining automation, note-taking, and AI-driven organization, Tana is rethinking how individuals and teams handle their workflow. And now, it’s stepping out of stealth with an impressive $25 million in funding to bring its vision to life.
What is Tana?
At its core, Tana serves as a powerful combination of automated list builder, note taker, and organizer. It’s designed to listen to conversations (think Zoom meetings or voice memos), transcribe them, and transform them into actionable tasks. Whether it’s creating lists, updating spreadsheets, or managing web content, Tana integrates seamlessly with your existing tools to get the job done.
A standout feature of Tana is its “Supertag” technology, inspired by Object-Oriented Programming. Supertags allow users to convert unstructured information into organized, structured data within seconds. Tana’s AI-driven platform is designed to improve over time, learning from data and user feedback to enhance its functionality.
A River of Information
The company takes its name from the Tana River in Norway, a metaphor for the flow of information it promises to streamline. “Tana is a river of information,” said CEO Tarjei Vassbotn, who co-founded the company alongside Grim Iversen (CPO) and Olav Kriken (COO). Based in Palo Alto with roots in Norway, Tana’s team brings a wealth of experience. Notably, Iversen was deeply involved in building Google Wave, a prior attempt at rethinking collaboration and productivity.
Early Traction and a Growing Community
Tana has already built a buzz in the productivity space, with 160,000 users on its waitlist, including a significant number from large enterprises. Since launching its closed beta nine months ago, it has attracted 30,000 testers and cultivated a community of 24,000 users on its dedicated Tana Slack channel.
Backed by Big Names
The startup has raised $25 million in funding across two rounds. The most recent Series A, totaling $14 million, was led by Tola Capital, with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Northzone, Alliance VC, and firstminute capital. An earlier $11 million seed round drew notable angel investors, including Lars Rasmussen (co-founder of Google Maps), Dropbox co-founder Arash Ferdowsi, Siqi Chen (Runway founder), and Olivier Pomel (Datadog founder).
These backers bring not only capital but also deep expertise in productivity tools and enterprise software. Rasmussen, in particular, expressed strong confidence in Tana’s vision. “Grim [Iversen] pitched some of these ideas during Google Wave, but we never had time to build them,” said Rasmussen. “Tana is taking those concepts to the next level.”
AI at the Center of Productivity
Tana leverages AI to process and organize data, as well as to integrate seamlessly with other tools. It currently partners with OpenAI for natural language processing while using models from Anthropic, Grok, and open-source platforms to power local functionality. Tana’s AI not only ingests information but also determines where and how to act on it, ensuring a cohesive workflow across multiple tools.
“We think of Tana as a tool catalog,” said Vassbotn. The platform integrates with around 50 apps (like Zoom), many of which are also building their own AI features. Tana’s goal is to unify these disparate systems to eliminate inefficiencies and data silos.
Looking Ahead
While Tana is already making waves among tech-savvy professionals, it’s still early days. Co-founder Olav Kriken acknowledges that the platform currently requires some tinkering to fully adapt to different workflows. However, the team envisions Tana becoming a game-changer for all knowledge workers, simplifying how we manage and act on information.
Investors like Sheila Gulati, founder and managing director of Tola Capital, are optimistic about Tana’s potential. “This is a miraculous experience,” said Gulati. “I use it to run our VC firm. The vision of productivity that Tana offers is completely different, and I believe this team has what it takes to play the long game.”
A Competitive Space
Tana is entering a crowded market, with established players like Notion also investing heavily in AI to enhance productivity. However, Tana’s unique approach to task management and its focus on creating a unified knowledge graph give it a competitive edge.
As Tana begins opening its waitlist and refining its platform, it marks an exciting step forward in the quest to conquer the productivity challenges of modern work. Only time will tell if Tana can deliver on its ambitious vision, but for now, it’s a startup worth watching.
