Tech companies joined protest to support immigration in the US

Facebook and Google have joined hundreds of technology companies against the decision made by US government to end the protection for immigrants, the companies told Reuters.

A legal action was filed on Wednesday on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the program gives protection of immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children from deportation, the Trump administration has decided to dump this protection program.

According to tech companies, such migrants are fuel for the U.S economy and ending the program will hit the growth of the country. The filing supports a lawsuit which was filed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

Tech companies signed the amicus brief—a supporting document submitted by the interested parties, other big companies that signed the document include Microsoft, Salesforce, Twitter, Airbnb, Uber and Lyft.

The Attorney General also filed an additional motion which seeks to block the withdrawal of DACA, the cause was supported by Apple Inc.

Apple’s vice president of people, Deirdre O’Brien said in the filing that Apple would be affected the most of DACA status of its employees is taken away, Apple employs more than 250 DACA recipients in the company.

The lawsuit challenges the Trump’s September decision to scrap DACA, the law was established by the previous president Barack Obama in 2012, the DACA is set to expire in March 2018.

The filing further reads, if DACA is removed it would affect all the U.S. companies and all the workers also the U.S economy as a whole.

Since the DACA program started in 2012, more than 900,000 immigrants were protected from deportation. A week ago tech companies including Google, Microsoft, Apple Amazon, Facebook and some others formed a coalition for American Dream, that seeks to provide illegal immigrants to the United States a status of permanent residency
