Bluesky Introduces Custom Feed for Vertical Videos as TikTok Faces Uncertainty
Bluesky, the decentralized social network, has jumped into the vertical video trend with its latest update, unveiling a dedicated custom feed for video content just as TikTok struggles with ongoing disruptions. With TikTok still unavailable in both the App Store and Play Store, the timing of Bluesky’s new feature could help reel in users looking for alternatives.
The new feed allows Bluesky users to browse trending vertical videos through the app’s explore tab. Similar to other popular platforms, viewers can swipe up to discover more videos. For added personalization, users can pin the video feed to their home screen or include it in their curated list of custom feeds. Bluesky announced the feature on Sunday, stating, “We had to get in on the video action, too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video! Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize.”
For those not immediately seeing the feature, Bluesky advised restarting the app to activate it. The company also acknowledged the early development of TikTok alternatives by developers using its underlying AT Protocol. Emerging apps such as Tik.Blue, Skylight.Social, and Bluescreen.Blue are currently in closed testing phases, showing Bluesky’s ecosystem is expanding in response to social media shifts.
Amid the chaos surrounding TikTok, Bluesky has experienced notable growth, recently surpassing 28 million users. Other social media platforms are also capitalizing on the situation. Elon Musk’s platform, X, recently debuted its own vertical video feed in the United States, while Meta announced a new video-editing app called Edits to compete with TikTok’s sibling app, CapCut.
With the social media landscape in flux, Bluesky’s latest move positions it as a viable player, offering an innovative twist on vertical video to satisfy users hungry for fresh content and platforms. The next few months will be critical in determining whether Bluesky can maintain its upward momentum as it broadens its features to engage a growing and diverse user base.
