Telegram to Offer Group Video Calls in May 2021

Telegram is set to introduce the group video call support for iOS devices in May this year. The company first announced this feature to be introduced in 2020, but somehow it failed to do so. This time we are certain that the iOS version would finally get this feature, as confirmed by Telegram CEO Pavel Durov.

The CEO stated:

Screen sharing, encryption, noise-cancelling, desktop and tablet support — everything you can expect from a modern video conferencing tool, but with Telegram-level UI, speed and encryption.

There is some uncertainty, though; would the company bring the end-to-end encryption for group video calls or not. The company hasn’t said a word about it. But we do know that Telegram offered end-to-end encryption on its one-on-one video calling. We might have to wait till May to get to know if end-to-end encryption meets the group video calls or not.

Telegram has grown rapidly since the pandemic outbreak where people started using it while working from home. Moreover, we also know that a large chunk of Telegram users are based on heartbroken WhatsApp users, when the latter said it would share some personal data with its parent company, Facebook.

Having said that, we also know that WhatsApp is still popular among the masses, and one of the reasons could be, as The Verge says, “WhatsApp actually beat Telegram to offering end-to-end encrypted group video calls. The company added group video and voice calling in 2018.”
